Our history
Original Mother House in Chaocheng, Shantung
The congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of China, or OLC for short, was founded by Cardinal Thomas Tien Ken-Sin, the first Asian Cardinal. In 1934, Cardinal Tien (“our founder”), then the Vicar of Yanggu, Shantung, realized the urgent need for local missionaries, and was moved by the Holy Spirit to found our congregation, in order to aid the diocese in its work. On December 23rd, 1938, the Roman Prefect approved the application for the new congregation, and thus we were officially founded on December 23rd, 1940.
1952, Hsinchu
In August of 1945 (Year 34 by the ROC Calendar), the Chinese Civil War erupted, and our congregation moved to Taiwan to continue our missionary work in February of 1952 (Year 41).
Old Meishan Church Former Meishan Mother House
October of 1954 (Year 43), our first Mother House and Novitiate in Taiwan were established in Meishan, Chiayi County.
Former Fang’an Mother House
Afterwards, as Meishan was far from the city and travel was inconvenient, we moved to Fang’an Road, Chiayi City in August of 1962 (Year 51).
After 20 years of development, the areas surrounding our Fang’an Mother House was no longer as quiet and simple as it was in the past. Thus, in the year 1982 (Year 71), we began building a new Mother House in the East District of Chiayi City, and moved to our current address, 166 Wenxin Alley, in January of 1984 (Year 73), which we still live in today.
